Ingredients (Serves 16-20)

  • 14 cups water

  • 24 oz canister stone-ground old fashioned grits

  • 2 tablespoons kosher salt

  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

  • 1 stick butter, cut into pieces

  • 1 cup heavy cream or half-and-half

Instructions

  1. Combine ingredients: Add water, grits, salt, and pepper to slow cooker. Stir well to combine.

  2. Add butter: Distribute butter pieces evenly throughout the mixture.

  3. Cook overnight: Cover and cook on LOW for 8 hours.

  4. Finish: Stir in heavy cream during the last 30 minutes of cooking for extra richness.

  5. Serve: Stir well before serving. Keep on "warm" setting for extended breakfast service.

Chef's Tips

  • Stone-ground grits essential - regular instant grits won't work for this method

  • Don't lift the lid during cooking - maintains consistent temperature

  • Stir before serving - natural separation occurs during long cooking

  • Add toppings - cheese, bacon bits, or green onions for variety

  • Leftovers reheat well - add a splash of milk or cream when reheating
